FUTURE RETAIL

Physical retail sales are up 6% YoY, a net total of 10,000 new retail locations. Axios gives a nice bird’s-eye-view of the continued hybridization of e-com and brick and mortar.

AMAZON

Amid mounting political pressure, Amazon is to raise the minimum wage of its US-based warehouse workers to $15/hour. According to the New York times, this will affect more than 350,000 employees.

“We listened to our critics, thought hard about what we wanted to do, and decided we want to lead,” Amazon’s chief executive, Jeff Bezos, said in a statement. “We’re excited about this change and encourage our competitors and other large employers to join us.”

Hot on the heels of this good news came reports that some employees may be making less money. The increased stable wage seems to come at the cost of bonuses and stock options.

LOGISTICS

A nice podcast from Postal Hub with last mile expert Dean Maciuba. Dean discusses the UPS vs FedEx model, where each shine from a ship-method perspective, and how UPS utilizes Amazon volume to subsidize its ground business.
